What an amazing story.
He seems to have experienced the worst and the best.
I'm glad he found your mum.
He sounds like a very special person.

you have touched my very soul.... peace be with you...

I figured he had to be a pretty terrific guy, based on what you'd said in your comments. This is an amazing tribute. One of the "silver linings" of the death of a loved one is finding out what others thought of him or remembered.

I'm sorry about the circumstances, but I'm very happy for you that you were able to tell him what he meant to you. I think it helps in the healing. Be gentle with yourself during this time (if I may share my experience with you).

My dear uncle (by marriage) was a POW in Corregidor in WWII. He was a lot like your stepdad; kind and loving. Something to do with being a prisoner? Who knows?

Lastly, I feel the same affinity for the Jewish religion. If reincarnation is how the universe works, I would say maybe I was Jewish in a previous life. It just resonates with me, somehow.

Anyway, keep taking care of yourself and the lovely Bertha.

P.S. I now have a second foster mommy with 4 babies. Squee!!

Berthaservant - thank you for sharing.

Dear Berthaservant,
My deepest condolences on your terrible loss. He must have been an amazing person. I hope the traditional week of mourning has helped you come to some peace in your grief.

Very touching and beautiful. A gitting tribute to an amazing person. I'm so sorry for your loss; but I'm glad you got to tell him how much he meant to you.

Sorry for the typo ... that was meant to read "fitting".

Berthaslave/Berthaservant: I took a while to come back to your blog as I figured and hoped you would be able to heal via your writing. Your comments and thoughts on CO are always kind and poignant, and I just knew your musings about your family would be touching - they were. *insert Kleenex here* Hang in there - you have so many friends out there lurking (i.e. enjoying your writing) and wishing you well.
Hugs to Bertha from fellow black cats in VA.
